If you’ve seen the trailer for Evan Almighty then you know the basic gist: Evan Baxter (the ass clown newscaster from Bruce Almighty becomes a congressman, moves to Virginia, talks to God, and builds an ark. Baxter, played by The Office and 40 Year Old Virgin’s Steve Carell, becomes a modern-day Noah, gathering two of every animal in preparation for a flood. Along the way he must overcome the skepticism of his family and colleagues.
Evan Almighty does absolutely nothing to surprise you. It’s a fairly by-the-books comedy. That being said, it’s a well done by-the-books comedy. The word that kept coming to mind while I was watching it was “cute”. It’s a movie everyone in the family can enjoy. Steve Carell is funny, but not overwhelmingly so. Lauren Graham, who plays his wife Joan, is hot. Overwhelmingly so. (Joan. Of Ark. Get it?) It’s nice to see her up on the big screen for a change. Wanda Sykes plays Baxter’s assistant and provides the funniest moments in the movie.
If you’re a big fan of either of the stars, or you’re looking for a good movie to take the family to. Otherwise wait and see it on DVD or cable.
