Man, you’ve just gotta love the intersection of math geek and musician. We’ve already covered Robert Schneider of The Apples in Stereo speaking at this year’s MathFest. Now we present for your mathematical and musical enjoyment Dan Snaith, better known to the music world as Caribou.
Dan’s not your average math geek. His dad is a college math professor. His sister is a college math professor. And he has a Ph.D. in mathematics from Imperial College London. It’s safe to say this guy knows his fractions.
With a background like his you might expect Snaith’s music to be cold and calculating. It’s anything but. In some cases it brims with joy. At other times it’s hauntingly melancholic. But it’s never cold.
Caribou releases it’s latest album, Andorra on Tuesday (on the always excellent Merge Records). It’s the third full-length CD released under the name Caribou. Snaith used to record, under the name Manitoba, but was sued by a DJ and musician who had been using the name Handsome Dick Manitoba since the 70s. Snaith claims he came up with the name Caribu while tripping on LSD.
Caribou - Melody Day
This joyful little ditty opens the album and seems to have fallen out of 1968. It’s a solid contender for the best song of the year.
Caribou - Shes -the One
This song explores the more laid back elements of Caribou’s music. It’s a super laid back ballad that makes effective use of electronica and orchestral strings.
