Sunday Music Spotlight – Elephant Parade

Elephant Parade - an indie pop duo from Brooklyn
Music brings people together. In the case of Ido and Estelle from Elephant Parade, music brought them together, but not in the way you might expect. The two happened to be at an 80′s party in New York. The bad music being played led them to strike up a conversation about what they would play if they controlled the stereo. After realizing they had similar tastes they decided to get together to record some songs.

They recorded those songs in their bedrooms using cheap microphones and free software. What came out of those recordings was their first album, the aptly-titled Bedroom Recordings.

Around the same time they started recording they started performing together live, playing New York hot spots like CBGB’s and Sin-e. During these live shows they perfected their distinct brand of intimate lo-fi pop.

Elephant Parade - Bedroom RecordingsElephant Parade - Boat Song

A very simple yet effective song featuring Estelle on vocals and a heavily reverbed piano.

Elephant Parade - Friday Night

Estelle and Ido share the vocal duties on this one. The song interestingly combines lyrics suggesting a Friday night full of partying with hushed vocals and simple accompaniment.
