‹ Mini Movie Review – The Bourne Ultimatum •

Annie Clark has already had an accomplished musical career. She has been a part of the pseudo-cult lifestyle of The Polyphonic Spree. She has toured with Television, The Arcade Fire, and Sufjan Stevens. And in June she released her first solo album, under the pseudonym St. Vincent.
At times reminiscent of Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald, Clark is also capable of referencing more current artists like Feist and Bjork. Her debut album Marry Me runs the gamut from classic torch song style to avant-garde pop, and does it all with aplumb.
St Vincent - Jesus Saves I Spend
This track highlights the more avant-garde side of St. Vincent, with multi-layered backing vocals, strings, and even a kazoo. But over it all are Clark’s solid and emotive vocals.
St Vincent - Paris Is Burning
This track veers more toward the torch song style at the beginning, but quickly combines that with classical and experimental influences. The end result is a diabolical waltz that would feel right at home on a Decemberists album.

A studio performance of “Your Lips are Red” which shows that she’s a far more than capable guitarist and that she doesn’t need a band to make interesting music:
And here’s a performance of “Paris is Burning” from the same session:
