Sunday Music Spotlight – The Detroit Cobras

The Detroit Cobras
The Detroit Cobras have been called “the world’s most original cover band”. They track down great old R&B rarities and perform them with a sound that could be described as Phil Spector producing the White Stripes, with The Supremes thrown in the mix. Singer Rachael Nagy lays down the Motown-like vocals in a voice described as “warm as the bourbon under the seat of your car” while guitarist Mary Ramirez lays down the Jack White style guitar riffs.

These ladies aren’t newbies in any respect. Appropriately coming out of Detroit (home of both The White Stripes and the Motown artists they draw inspiration and material from), the band’s been around for twelve years, kicking ass and surviving lineup changes. Through it all they’ve continued to be the chicks in the bar that will out-drink you, kick your ass at pool, and blow out your eardrums all night long. Kick ass!

The Cobras released their fourth full album, Tied and True in April.

The Detroit Cobras - Tied and TrueThe Detroit Cobras - As Long As I Have You

A mid-tempo rocker that’s good example of the mixture of Motown-style vocals with crunching guitars. Tell me this doesn’t scream “Road Trip!”.

The Detroit Cobras - The Hurts All Gone

This tune really shows off Nagy’s sultry vocals. Hard to believe she’s an ex-stripper…
