For this week’s Random Covers let’s hearken back to Christmas of 1985, when the Nintendo Entertainment System made its way under our tree, and my lifelong obsession with video games was born. Many a hour would be spent with that glorious gaming system over the next few years, playing games that ranged from popular hits like Super Mario Brothers and The Legend of Zelda to more obscure, but equally enthralling gems like Solomon’s Key. These games, and many others like them, taught me hand-eye coordination, problem solving skills, and that it’s possible to make good, memorable music using only 8bit electronics.
To celebrate both the holiday season and the glory of 8bit music, 8bitpeoples have compiled a Christmas album consisting of traditional songs crafted out of music and sound effects from classic gaming consoles.
