Sunday Music Spotlight – Delta Spirit

Delta Spirit, an indie rock band from San Diego
What’s the best way to describe the music of San Diego’s Delta Sprit? Toe-tapping, hip-shaking rock n’ roll with a sound as sunny as their So Cal roots. Almost like a modern American version of 60s-era Rolling Stones. Their high-energy songs will have you singing along in your car at the stoplight, while the people in the cars around you laugh and tell the people they’re talking to on their cell phones about the crazy person in the car next to them. Not that this has happened to me…

Delta Spirit is a relatively young band. It formed in 2005 when three friends set out form a band. They literally found their singer on the street. Matthew Vasqeuz was busking at 2AM when Brandon Young found him. The quartet hired Kelly Winrich to produce them, but when he joined them on stage their lineup was complete. They released an EP in 2006. It’s called I Think I Found It, and ironically, it’s impossible to find. If anyone knows where to snag a copy drop me a line.

EP in hand the band set out on tour. They opened for the likes of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Cold War Kids, and Dr. Dog. Along the way they honed what is quickly becoming a legendary live show. When time came for them to record their first full-length album they decided to eschew record company funding and took matters into their own hands. The result is Ode to Sunshine, a downright great rock album. Don’t believe me? Check out these songs:

The the hot piano riffs will make you want to get up and dance. The perfect vocals will make you sing along. And one listen will make you buy the album.

I’ve listened to this song approximately 35 times over the last week, and I’m not even remotely close to getting sick of it. Either I’m losing it a little or this is a great, great song. Or possibly a little from column A and a little from column B…
In any case, “if you’re feelin’ what I’m feelin’ come on, all you soul-searchin’ people come on.”
