Sunday Music Spotlight – Dressy Bessy

Denver-based indie pop group Dressy Bessy

Good music doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes all you need is an electric guitar, a few chords, drums, and catchy girl-pop vocals. It’s a pretty simple formula, but it’s one that works very well for the best band I’ve ever heard who’s named after a doll, Denver’s Dressy Bessy.

Lead singer and guitarist Tammy Ealom was no stranger to the music industry when she formed Dressy Bessy in 1996. She had already been in a few bands before she hooked up with bassist Rob Greene and drummer Darren Albert. They recruited Ealom’s boyfriend, John Hill, to play guitar (a job he also does for The Apples in Stereo) and started recording. Since then the band has released five full-length albums and a handful of EPs. Their latest effort, Hollarandstomp, came out in September and contains 13 tracks of the band’s brand of infectious pop.

“In Your Headphones” sums up what Dressy Bessy’s music is: straightforward, simple, and catchy. Power chords, a sing-along chorus, and a simple guitar lead make for an infectious cocktail.

The power chords are back. Ealom’s vocals here remind me of Deborah Harry a little.
