‹ Trailer for Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler •

Merge hip-hop beats, dirty slide guitar, a little funk and soul, and some down-home blues and what do you get? The same thing if you mix some basic ingredients with good technique and a lot of love: Mama’s Cookin’.
Mama’s Cookin’ is a unique band from Boulder, Co. With all of the elements they mix into their music you would never guess the musical background of the band’s members: they were all jazz students at Colorado’s Western State College. Despite their western heritage, they moved to New York in 2007 to record their first album. The resulting eponymous LP is a lively mix of influences destined to get you moving.

God damn that’s a great guitar sound. Seriously. Trying to describe a guitar sound makes you sound a little bit like a wine snob. You start using words that seem out of place and immediately spring you into pretentious asshole territory. For instance, this tone has a strong attack, notes of dirty crunch, and a great reverb finish. See what I mean?
Anyway, the guitar in this song is amazing, and the rest of the song is good too. But then again I’m a sucker for anything that’s a new spin on classic rock.

That great guitar tone is featured again here, but it’s not alone. There’s solid and interesting drumming, a hint of organ, and vocals that beg you to sing along.
