Sunday Music Spotlight – Math and Physics Club

Math and Physics Club, and indie pop band from Seattle
Do you Morrissey? But are you inherently a happy person, and wish that his music wasn’t so damn gloomy? Then you’re in luck. Math and Physics Club sounds a lot like Manchester’s prophet of pain, but with a twist of Belle and Sebastian that brightens things up a bit.

When James Werle and Charles Bert got together to record some songs, their intent wasn’t necessarily to form a band. They were just looking for something to do. But when they met drummer Kevin Emerson they decided to get serious. They grabbed bassist Ethan Jones and violinist Saundrah Humphrey and recorded a demo.

That demo got them signed to Matinee Recordings, and another demo started to get airplay on local Seattle radio stations. Before they knew it, Math and Physics Club had fans, and they had never even played live. To remedy that they hit the road, playing festivals and shows all over the northwest.

In 2006 they released their first full-length album, an eponymous effort that introduced their fans to a more polished sound.

A catchy melody, jangly guitars, and a good beat make this a great example of a good chilled-out pop song. The violin is a nice touch too, helping the song stand out from the twee pack.

Sounds so much like The Kinks it should almost be called “La La La Lola”. It’s true though, there IS “just something about a girl with a bass guitar”.
