Sunday Music Spotlight – The Tiny

The Tiny - an orchestral pop band from Sweden
Piano, cello, upright bass, and ethereal, childlike vocals are the hallmarks of The Tiny, Stockholm’s orchestral pop meisters. Two solid albums have earned them worldwide acclaim, but if not for an icy fall they would have never formed.

Pianist and singer Ellekari Larsson was working towards being a professional ice skater when she slipped on the ice and injured herself. Unable to pursue her original dream she formed a new one: become a musician. She joined a string of punk and ska bands trying to find the right fit. But when she met cellist Leo Svensson she knew she’d found a match.

Svensson had just dropped out of the Royal Academy of Music. He brought a classical sensibility to songs Larsson had already begun. Together they fleshed out the songs and started to form a sound. They recruited bassist Johan Berthling and started playing gigs around Stockholm. From there the band rented some studio time and recorded their first album, Close Enough. After two years of touring the band released their second album, Starring Someone Like You in 2006.

If Bjork was Swedish she would sound like this. I’m sure of it.

The Tiny - Kind Of Like-you

Childlike vocals and a toy piano almost make this sound like a kid’s recording. But the subtle harmonies and mature lyrics make it clear that The Tiny has adult sensibilities.
