Sunday Music Spotlight – Woodward

Woodward, an indie pop/rock band from Detroit
What do you expect from a band from Detroit? Either a rough, rocking edge or smooth Motown soul, right? How about bright indie pop? No? Well then you’ll be surprised by the Motor City’s Woodward, because they bring slick synths along with their electric guitars yet don’t have backup singers in coordinated outfits.

J.P. Zammit and Dan Karmel were childhood friends with a dream to someday start a band. Once they hooked up with keyboardist Steve Hull and drummer Dave Tilove their band was finally a reality. Showing the pride they have for their home city, they named themselves Woodward after a major street in Detriot. With a full band and a name locals could relate to, the stage was set for Woodward to take Detroit by storm.

Despite the fact that they’ve only been around since 2006, Woodward sounds old. In a good way. Their sound has a vintage quality to it that could fit in any decade since the 60s. Yet they package that old sound in songs that sound fresh and modern. Kind of the sweet and sour chicken of the music world: in theory it’s a paradox, but in reality it’s delicious. The band released their debut album, But Your Kids Are Gonna Love It in 2007, and it contains 12 tracks of this tasty blend.

Bright synthesizers, crunching guitars, and stylized vocals recall 70s prog rock. But updated for 21st century listeners.

More laid back, and more reminiscent of Oasis or The Beatles than ELO, “Days You Came From” shows that Woodward is able to cross genres and decades, and still keep a sense of who they are as a band.
