Van Wilder Playing Deadpool

Ryan Reynolds to play Deadpool
In case you haven’t heard, Hugh Jackman is reprising his role from the earlier X-Men movies in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the first of what are planned to be several X-Men spinoffs. The movie, which is set to hit theaters next year, is just starting production. Details are starting to come out about who else will be in the movie, and the latest is very interesting.

Ain’t it Cool News is reporting that Ryan Reynolds, the guy who played Van Wilder to perfection, is going to play mercenary and anti-hero Deadpool. This won’t be Reynolds’ first chance to deal with comic fanboys, as he starred in 2004’s Blade: Trinity. Despite that role, I really see him as more of a comic actor than an action star, but it seems that early fanboy reactions are positive.

In addition to Deadpool, Film School Rejects reports that morbidly obese villain The Blob will make an appearance.

I couldn’t care less about The Blob, and I stopped reading comics around the time Deadpool was introduced, so anyone want to tell me why this is good (or bad) news? Anyone? Any of my readers happen to know anything about Deadpool?

Are you kidding me? I know a thing or two about Deadpool and you beat me to posting about this! This is PERFECT casting. He was basically a toned down Deadpool in Blade: Trinity anyway.

For the uninitiated, Deadpool is a washout of the Weapon X program. He had cancer so he volunteered to be a guinea pig for Weapon X. They tried to synthetically replicate Wolverine’s healing factor. It worked, sort of. He has a more potent healing factor than Wolverine, but his entire body is horribly scarred. The process also drove him a little batty. He escaped and became a mercenary. In the comics he cracks wise more than Spidey, kicks more ass than Wolverine, and manages to be a fairly deep character when the right writer is working on the book. So if you take Reynolds’ Hannibal King from Blade: Trinity, amp up the violence and nuttiness, you have Deadpool.

So if you like him in a comedic role, this is it. It’s a comedy action role. I couldn’t be more psyched about this. He has the perfect blend of humor and asskickery to pull off the role. Ever since Blade: Trinity I thought he’d make a great Deadpool. Hell, he even said he’d LOVE to play the character and has been attached to play the role for some time.

Also as an added bonus…this means there will be a movie Deadpool ACTION FIGURE! Booyah!

Ok, so I had a nerdgasm when I heard the news. Don’t judge me.

I had a feeling you might just chime in on this one…

So you’re saying Van Wilder is a better casting choice than, oh I don’t know, the guy who played Taj?

Well, Taj as Deadpool would be pretty damn funny, but yeah, Van is a much better choice.
