‹ Video for Blitzen Trapper’s “Furr” •
During my formative music years I had the fortune of living within broadcast range of an amazing radio station: WHFS. While competitors like DC101 and Baltimore’s 98 Rock were playing glam metal hairbands HFS brought The Pixies, R.E.M., 10,000 Maniacs, and Siouxsie and the Banshees to the DC suburbs. If I focus I can still hear one of their DJs, Weasel, signing off of his lunchtime show, Flashback Cafe, with the station’s tagline “99-1, HFS”. Sadly HFS as I knew it is gone forever, but I still hear songs from time to time that were staples of its rotation, and I never fail to fondly remember it. Edie Brickell and The New Bohemians’ “What I Am” is one of those songs:
A few fun facts about Edie Brickell:
- Her dad Eddie is in the Texas State Bowling Association Hall of Fame (so she was obviously destined for stardom)
- She dropped out of college to join The New Bohemians
- She’s married to Paul Simon. The two met when Edie performed “What I Am” on Saturday Night Live
Have a good weekend everyone.
