The release date for The Decemberists’ forthcoming album, Hazards of Love, is creeping towards us. But the band is doing a good job keeping interest up. A couple of weeks ago they released the track listing. Now they’re making the first single, “The Rake’s Song”, available as a free download from their website.
In typical Decemberists fashion, the rake in the title isn’t a garden implement, it’s a licentious man. In this case one whose wife dies, leaving him with four children. After dispatching them in various ways he lives a happy bachelor’s life. In other words, it’s a real pick me up tune. It IS catchy though. Check it out:

Wow, that’s about as cheery as the Mariner’s Revenge. It IS mega catchy though.
