Bob Log III’s music is rooted in Delta blues, as timeless a genre as exists in music. He pulls his songs and style from traditional bluesmen like Mississippi Fred McDowell, Lightnin’ Hopkins, and Robert Johnson. Like these musical legends, his songs often revolve around women and booze. Unlike his predecessors, Bob Log III wears daredevil jumpsuits and a motorcycle helmet with a telephone mounted in it for a microphone, and he plays drums with his feet while he plays his slide guitar. Other than that, he’s pretty traditional.
If you hadn’t guessed, Bob Log III is not your average performer. His antics are unusual, but they’re grounded in a belief that all musicians could subscribe to: it’s his job to make his audience have a good time. Or as he puts it, “You take a guitar, turn it up, make the ladies dance, and have a good time.”
And he puts his money where the telephone receiver over his mouth is. His shows are footstomping, jumping, guitar dance parties. And there’s often audience participation. For his song “I Want Your Shit on My Leg” he’ll invite two members of the audience to sit on his lap, a feat which becomes interesting when he starts drumming. As a setup for his song “Boob Scotch” he’ll ask ladies in the audience to flavor his scotch by dipping their boobs in it. And we won’t even get into what happens during “Clap Your Tits”. Suffice it to say, a good time is had by all.
Musically Log is a one-man blues band. He plays slide guitar, sings through his telephone-receiver mic, and plays a bass drum and a cymbal fitted with a bass pedal. The telephone mic gives him a very distinct vocal sound, and muffles the words to the point where they don’t really matter. What really makes him effective though is his masterful guitar playing. He’s so fast that his record label started a rumor that he lost one hand in an accident and had it replaced by a monkey paw. That’s obviously not true (right?), but it shows the supernatural-type ability he possesses.
Log has released four albums over the last decade. His most recent, My Shit is Perfect, just came out, and it showcases his style of raunchy, dirty blues.
If you just listened to the intro you might think this was standard Delta blues. Then the vocals come in and you realize something’s up. Still the song chugs along and doesn’t give you and choice but to come with it.
“Shake A Little, Wiggle It And Jiggle It Too”
Dirty, raw, and noisy, this is a song that shouldn’t work. But it does. It’s not really fast enough to dance to, but it makes you want to move anyway.
