There are different paths to becoming a fan. Sometimes the artist grows on you, a slow burn that builds into a raging fire. Other times a lightning bolt strikes you in the first few bars and you’re immediately engulfed. The latter perfectly describes my experience with Golden Bloom. The first song I heard was “E.H.M.”, the opener on debut album Fan the Flames, and within 10 seconds I was hooked. My first reaction was, “who the hell are these guys?”
Turns out it’s basically just one guy. Shawn Fogel wrote all the songs on the album. And he played all the instruments. And did the singing. Basically he did everything but record the thing. Once I realized that I was even more impressed. How can one guy do all this, and do it so well? I don’t have an answer to that question, but I can tell you this: whatever he decides to do in the future, I’m in.
A catchy melody, building on itself, leads into a sedate verse and catchy chorus, resulting in a truly top-notch pop song. It’s so well-crafted it sounds like something you’ve heard before, but just can’t place.
