I’m not sure what it is about our friends north of the border, but they seem to crop up a lot here on Sunday Music Spotlight. Tonight we head out west, to Victoria, British Columbia, to take a look at a husband and wife team who are poised to take North America by storm. In their 3 years as a band The Paper Cranes have played festivals, gotten rave reviews, and had a song featured on a Nissan commercial. But after hearing their upcoming album Chivalry’s Dead I have to believe that’s the tip of the iceberg.
Ryan McCullagh and his wife Miranda Roach form the core of The Paper Cranes. They’re joined by guitarist Braeden Paterson, bassist Alex Bodman, and drummer Jeff Mitchelmore. They’ve already built a dedicated following through touring and solid college radio airplay, but I have a feeling that following is going to start growing in the next few weeks. They’re set to release their second full-length album, Chivalry’s Dead, on August 13th, and it’s everything you could want in a pop record. It’s got hooks. It’s got good lyrics. It’s got beats that make you shake your head. In the end it sounds like if the guys from Spoon had gotten together in about 1983. You know what? I can’t describe it. Just listen:
“I’ll Love You Til’ My Veins Explode”
“Rabbit in a Snare”
