I know I previously announced a boycott of any mention of this movie, but this is just too disturbing to not share. Jackie Chan is set to play Mr. Miyagi in Will Smith’s remake of The Karate Kid.
NNNOOOOOO!!!
Really, could this be any worse of an idea? Pat Morita’s portrayal of Mr. Miyagi had class and dignity. Jackie Chan was in The Tuxedo and Rush Hour 3. He’s known for being the goofy ass-kicking guy, not the dignified teacher. So now on top of the fact that this movie, which doesn’t need to be remade, has Will Smith’s son as Daniel-san, it has the clown from Shanghai Knights as his friend and sensei. Somebody fucking kill me.

Hey guys, welcome to the site. Glad you stopped by to read this, and to enter into such lively and articulate debate. For the record, Jackie Chan is a badass, and he’s awesome in most of his movies. But he’s not Mr. Miyagi. Not even close. I wish you could stop sucking his dick long enough to see that.

Just pointing out that JC is a good character. But setting him to play Miyagi is idiotity.

Jackie Chan is getting old. He’s getting a lot older so it’s about time he’s started playing the “master” or teacher roles in movies. It’s a change because we’ve seen him as the star of a ton of movies, but don’t be surprised if he starts playing in movies where he trains someone, is killed and avenged.

Well, since its taking place in China now, I think Jackie Chan is a good choice for the role actually. Despite the shit that he’s made in America, he’s played serious more reserved roles that he actually pulls off really well (if you don’t watch it in the dubbed form that is). Examples: New Police Story, The Shinjuku Incident. Plus Mr. Miyagi was kinda a goofy character anyways.
I do think however, that the movie should be changed to The Kung Fu Kid and give credit to the original creator at the begining or end of the film. Something like “based on the story by blablablabla”
The only reason i can think of that they kept the name is either licensing issues or they didn’t want people saying “Hey! This is just like the Karate Kid! What a rip off!”
I also think that Big Will’s son is too young. I mean, Jackie Chan beating up a bunch of 12 year olds to save him? Kinda not as heroic as an old guy whopping some high school senior ass. But hey, don’t blame Jackie that he has to beat children. Blame Hollywood
