The first thing you notice about The National is the voice: it’s deep. Real deep. And a little rough around the edges. But somehow lead singer Matt Berninger makes it work. He uses his voice to pull the listener into the emotional surroundings the band sets up in their songs.
The band got their start in Ohio in the late 90’s, but quickly made their way to New York, releasing their first album, creatively called The National, in 2001. They kept plugging away, and their 2005 release The Alligator was on many Best of 2005 lists. They released their fourth album The Boxer on May 22nd.
